Mad Craze Coming to an End

Lately we are hearing more and more news about the coupon extremists. I recently watched a story on the news last week about this very topic and I was in awe when I saw how much these people are saving. Really, are you saving that much because it looks like you all have come to endure an obsessive compulsive behavior over saving and hording food. You all need therapy just to get yourselves back in control!

So in this story I saw garages, closets and rooms in houses full of food. I saw at least 50 cans of Hormel Chili, 12 tubes of toothpaste etc…So how might one household eat that much food before it expires? Have you thought about that question or are you going to open up a food pantry. In my opinion it would only make sense to give to people who can use it.

I think the real question here is why all of sudden the mad craze to save on food, yeah its pricey and it comes with bad economy but really are you saving that much money that you can afford to have that much food on hand? Sooner or later, it will waste away because of the expiration dates.

The most bothersome thing about this topic is that when I am at the grocery store with my list and I reach for an item that isn’t there because I know some extreme couponer cleared the shelf before I got there. Well lo and behold the grocery stores are on to you people because now they are limiting how much we can buy and now limiting how many coupons can be used in a single checkout.

I just have to say “Thanks” for screwing the system, because I rely on my coupons for savings and for you extremists who think nothing of the rest of the us we get limited because of you.

Reap instead of Weep

Summer is on its way and we all could use some insight to summer savings. You probably do not know I am all about saving and being frugal. Here are some summer saving tips to help you.

*Start a vegetable garden and reap the fresh rewards. I think its important to have a garden that you can enjoy during the summer but also enjoy during the winter. I always plant green beans, peppers, cucumbers and tomatoes. I especially enjoy picking vegetables to freeze to have during the winter.

*Hot and Humid days are no one’s favorite type of day especially not mine. Here are some tips to help you save some money. On hot days, close your windows and close your blinds or curtains. It’s best to block the sunshine instead of letting the heat in. I prefer using insulated curtains because not only do they work but they block the heat from the sun and keep rooms comfortable. Don’t run your appliances on hot days because your appliances will work harder and they will increase your homes temperature. Keep this in mind, caves are dark and cool. Your home could be too.

*Run the air conditioner during the day but its best to use a unit that is an energy star product and you can set the temperature. Don’t forget to clean the air filters for the air conditioner; this way your appliance runs smarter not harder. The evenings are best for opening the windows unless its humid outside.

*Savings for vacations and day trips; consider checking with your local library and chamber of commerce to see if they offer any coupons or passes to places such as the aquarium, sporting events, walking tours, etc…Also check online to see if there any savings you can reap for your day trip or vacation. If you are a member of AAA you get a percentage of  savings there too just by showing your card.

*Consider packing a lunch if you are going on a day trip or to an amusement park because concession food can be very pricey.

If you have any suggestions for summer savings, please leave a comment so others can benefit too.

How to be Frugal and Save part 2

We all have been down on our luck from time to time and during a depressed economy it only makes sense to try to save where ever you can. Most of us are on reduced hours and some don’t have jobs so I believe everyone can save money if they give it a try.

Here are my tips:

Car insurance is very expensive and if you have had the same company for a couple of years, you might want to give them a call and see if you can get your rate reduced. If they can’t cut your rate then its time to shop around. Here is great website www.progressive.com, they will compare rates with all the major insurance companies it just takes a few minutes.

House Insurance same situation start shopping around you might be surprised you can get a better rate.  A year ago and half  ago I shopped around and Wow we saved over $200.00 just for the house. That was a big savings!

Renters Insurance shop around and get quotes and see what kind of savings you might receive.

If you can bundle your insurances that you need, you will save even more money.

Enough about insurance I think you get the idea.

Lets chat about other ways to save. How savvy are you? Do you like to make things at home or reuse items?

Well I do, here is a website that most of you will enjoy www.tipnut.com come along and check it out. You can make everything homemade. Another great way to save and get creative. Some stuff I have made is window cleaner, home-made bath stuff, natural pesticides and I have used the kitchen tips section a lot. This site is not just for the women, it’s for everyone. Go ahead check it out!

Cable, Phone and Cellphone~here we have the big three. Call the cable company to see if they are offering any great deals, same goes for the phone company. The cellphone company give them a call and have them look at your account and tell them you are looking to save some money and see if they can help you.  Check with your employer and see if they offer any discounts for any of your service providers and if they do take advantage of the savings.

Online shopping my favorite topic. I have this website that I found a couple of years ago and I just love being rewarded for shopping.

Go to www.fatwallet.com . When I shop online I visit this website first to see if there are any coupons, discounts or cash back. This is the best website I have ever used. I just love the cash back option, watch how much you can accumulate with using this site.  Savings right back in your pocket.

I like helping people in any way I can so I bring this blog to you because I have had my share of being down on my luck. I like sharing accomplished ideas that I know work.

If you have any ideas or comments about this blog, please feel free to leave me a comment.

How to be Frugal and Save

How to stretch and save our money during hard times?

Here is some simple tips that I use on a regular basis.

Make a grocery shopping list of items you need not want. Visit this coupon site  www.ppgazette.com. This particular website is exact to the coupons you find in your newspaper on Sunday.  I like this site because you can print the same coupon a couple of times. Look at the flyers for the grocery and drug stores. You will be surprised that one item maybe in on sale in all of your local stores but one of them maybe cheaper.

My husband and I grocery shop together and never go shopping when you are hungry…you will spend less if you eat prior to going. We have 3 grocery stores that are just minutes apart so what we do is cherry pick~we shop the flyers and make a list for all 3 stores (if need be). You would be amazed at just how much you can save! I am finding that some grocery stores will give you money off your grocery bill for bringing your own shopping bags. I save .30 a week just for using my own bags. That is money saved!

Here’s another tip for the grocery store. Every grocery store has a discounted area…take a look you just never know what you might find. I would definitely stay away from dented cans. At the grocery store I visit, I buy bread and bagels for 1/2 the price and I stick them in the freezer and use what I need. Also, look in the meat department for “Manager Specials”…sometimes you can get some really sweet deals especially if you need to something for dinner for the same day. A dear friend introduced us to this saving tip.

Gasoline is expensive as we all know it. Visit www.gasbuddy.com to find a cheaper price for gas. If you have a grocery store or mass merchandiser that offers gas you may want to consider getting gas from them. Almost always they offer gas at a discounted price. You may need a rewards card to get the discounted price. This is the way to go!.

How to save money? I like this one. First you need to start a budget and stick to it. Its hard I know this but it make sense. You can go online and get a monthly/semi-monthly budget form that will help you create your budget. After you have done this, you will be able to see how much you have left over that you can put into savings.

Save your change! I have a special change bank that adds up my change. I like this because I save change and then deposit it into savings every few months. You will be surprised just how much you can save if you don’t spend it. I also save my 1 dollar bills and deposit them every week at the bank.

The newspaper is great to have especially on the weekends but if you didn’t know this, you can get all the newspapers online. So stop paying for something you can get for free.

Eating Out can be costly~eat at home for 1/2 the price and you don’t have to leave a tip unless you want to.  There are plenty of websites that have tons of recipes available to cook new things. I like www.allrecipes.com, the recipes on this site are plentiful.

Last but not least STOP charging the credit card.  Simple if you don’t have the money to buy it with cash or a check then you probably shouldn’t buy it!
